Fred was born of William Henry and Lydia Sattler from Stuttgart Germany on September 28, 1915 in Tracy, CA.  After graduating from Cal Berkeley with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Fred immediately enlisted in the US Army Air Force in 1941 and served more than 6 years of active duty in WWII, primarily in Africa (navigator in B24 and 25 bombers).  He married Lt. Lola Truman from Modesto, CA, on March 3, 1942.  After the War, he served in the Air Force Active Reserves for nearly 20 years. 

For more than 40 years, Fred worked in highway construction for 4 large companies (VP for two) and built most of the freeways and bridges in Northern California through the Sierra Nevada Mountains.  He worked with A.J. Diani (WWII Navy Construction veteran) in the early 60s and widened the 101 FWY from 2 to 3 lanes through Camarillo to Thousand Oaks.  Lola, his family, and German Shepherds were the most important parts of his life in those years. 

At the age of 65, Fred retired.  Shortly thereafter, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Master and was baptized at Twin Lakes Baptist Church in Santa Cruz, CA, where he and Lola lived.  In 2000, they relocated to Camarillo to be closer to Fred Richard (son), Gail, and grandchildren (Amanda, Jonathan, Timothy) and were members of the First Baptist Church of Camarillo. 

In 2007, they moved to University Village (UV) in Thousand Oaks. Fred transitioned to Oakview when he became blind for the final 2 years of his life.  The nurses and staff adored him and recognized his love affair with Lola, who would visit him most afternoons and read the Bible to him.  Afterwards, with Lola sitting at the bedside, they would fall asleep holding hands. When one would eventually awaken, Lola would pray, kiss him on the forehead and return to UV with her stroller.  He told Gail, “Freddy”, and Amanda that the single most important thing was for them to read him God’s Word when they visited him each week.  Fred reiterated often during his last year how much he wanted to be in Heaven with Lola to worship his Lord.
