SOCORRO C. MARTINEZ
July 13th, 1924 – January 28th, 2018
Our loving mother, Socorro C. Martinez joined our father Donato Martinez in eternal life on January 28th, 2018. She was a resident of Port Hueneme, Ca. since 1956.
Our mother was born on July 13th, 1924 in Los Angeles, Ca. to Pedro and Guadalupe Carrillo. As a young girl she moved with her family to Tijuana, Mexico. She lived there until she married our father on July 11th, 1942. After our father returned from World War II they settled in Oxnard, Ca. until 1956 when they purchased their home in Port Hueneme.
Our mother’s greatest joy was being surrounded by family and friends and it was so apparent in our new home. Mom had a passion for baseball that both she and our father shared. It was ever so common to see our mom in the street with her children and neighborhood children playing a game of baseball. She had a powerful left handed swing! Her support for her children and grandchildren at sporting events was without question as her verbal support often drove our father to sit by himself!
Many of the neighborhood children referred to her as Momma Sue because of the delicious flour tortillas she would make for everyone. She was an excellent cook who was known for her excellent tamales, rice, beans, chili rellenos and so much more. Mom was also an excellent baker who made countless wedding cakes over the years that were beautiful masterpieces.
Our mom was a wonderful wife to our father supporting him in his various coaching endeavors over the years. She introduced many young ballplayers to pan dulce as she provided snacks at many of the American Legion games our dad coached. She was also involved with all of our dad’s fund raisers applying her cooking skills to help raise money for youth programs. Our mother always had our dad’s back!
Our mother’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those who love and miss her. Survivors include her children, Donato Jr. of Colorado, Bobby of San Diego, Bill of Port St. Lucie, Fl., Jim of Studio City, Sandy of Tehachapi, Rene of Port Hueneme, Teresa and Mary Helen of Portola, Ca. and Cathy of Port Hueneme.
