Tribute

Caitlin Rose Meaney passed away peacefully at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on April 24th, 2021. She had courageously battled osteosarcoma for 5 years.

Born on May 25th, 2002, Caitlin was a life-long resident of Newbury Park. She attended Banyan Elementary School and Sequoia Middle School, where she was instantly recognizable for both her height and her bright red hair.

In the summer of 2016, Catlin was diagnosed with bone cancer just before beginning high school. Despite treatments often interfering with her school schedule, Caitlin excelled in school, and was recognized as a “Student of Character” by her teachers. It was during this time that Caitlin discovered her passion for medicine and was a founding member of the Ventura County Medical Explorer’s program. She made an impact there as well, and was exceptional in her ability to always be, unapologetically, herself. Eventually, she was elected Sergeant at Arms for the program. In 2020, Caitlin graduated from Newbury Park High School, before attending California State University, Channel Islands to study Pre-Nursing.

Undoubtedly, Caitlin was inspired to pursue a career in the medical field by the amazing doctors, nurses, and staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. While few people look forward to going to the hospital, Caitlin created meaningful relationships with many of the staff. Caitlin confronted every challenge head-on, and let her vibrant personality shine through to everybody she encountered. Through it all, Caitlin’s strength, thoughtfulness, and sense of humor never wavered.

Caitlin never shied away from talking about her battle. In 2018, she won an essay contest by the Cancer Support Community entitled “Dear Cancer, It’s Me…”. She also won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons in the 2019 Ventura County Fair Youth Photography Expo. She enjoyed music, painting, and could bake the best apple pie the world has ever known. She was the best daughter, sister, granddaughter, cousin, niece and friend anybody could hope to have. Caitlin will forever be an inspiration to everyone who met her.

A celebration of Caitlin’s life will be held at Monte Vista Presbyterian Church (3797 Lynn Road in Newbury Park) on Saturday, May 15th, at 1PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Mike Nosco Memorial Foundation or Make-A-Wish Tri-Counties.
