Tribute

On January 29th, 1931 Charles Dowler, who went by Chuck, was born to Katherine and Frank Dowler in Clearwater, CA.  The youngest of three, Chuck, his brother Dick, and his sister Eleanor, grew up in Whittier, CA, where Chuck graduated from Whittier High School in 1949.

Chuck went on to serve in the US Coast Guard, where he was trained as an electrician. After completing his service in the military, Chuck began what was to become a 34 year career with General Telephone. About this time he began building a ski boat, something his friends and family would enjoy for many years to come.

Chuck met the love of his life, Barbara, in 1961, when she moved into the apartment next door to his.  Nine months later, on June 8, 1962, Chuck and Barbara were married.  Two months after their wedding, Chuck and Barbara moved to Santa Maria, CA.  In October of 1963 their son Craig was born, and in November of 1964 their daughter Debbie was born.  The family moved to Camarillo, CA in 1968, living there for over 53 years.

Chuck and Barbara enjoyed an active social life, which included many years in the local Barnburners Square Dance club, playing cards, and bowling leagues. Chuck loved the outdoors, and the family’s summer vacations to the Sierra Mountains were always something he enjoyed.  On those trips he was always the first one up, making sure the coffee was ready when everyone else woke up. Thanks Dad! His hobbies included snow skiing, water skiing, fishing, hiking, carpentry and gardening.  He was even skiing at Mammoth Mountain back in the 1950’s.   Chuck was an all-around handyman and meticulous in his work. He was an involved member of Camarillo Christian Church and volunteered his time working at Food Share and Many Meals.

After Chuck’s retirement from the phone company in 1987, Chuck and Barbara poured their hearts into the lives of their children and grandchildren.  In recent years Chuck has also enjoyed visits from his great-granddaughter Charlotte.  Chuck was blessed by Craig (Lezlee) Dowler and Debbie (Dave) Foucar with five amazing grandchildren, Nathan and Sarah Dowler, Melissa (Cameron) Everhart, Jessica Foucar, and Samantha (Jeremy) Stein, and great-granddaughter Charlotte Everhart.

After years of battling dementia, but never losing his wonderful sense of humor, Chuck succumbed to the disease on August 31, 2021, at the age of 90.  He was preceded in death seven months prior by his wife of 58 years.  While he is greatly missed, we rejoice in knowing that he is with the Lord and reunited with his beloved Barbara.

A graveside service will be held at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park on Friday, September 10th, at 12:00 noon.
