Charles “Charlie” Cecil Ulmer, 66, of Oxnard born February 24, 1954, died unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, January 12, 2021.
Charlie was born at St John’s Hospital in Oxnard to James and Ellen Ulmer and was raised in Oxnard along with his twin brothers, Raymond and Wesley Ulmer and graduated from Rio Mesa High School.
Charlie is survived by his beloved wife, Valerie, his twin brothers and spouses, Raymond & Debra and Wesley and Barbara, Valerie’s sisters and their spouses, Roberta and Mike Mc Bride and Suzanne and Jackie Sweet, numerous nieces, nephews and great-ones, too.
Charlie met the love of his life Valerie, in 1973, after she blew up the engine of her 1971 Olds Cutlass 442 and needed a really good mechanic. Their love was truly meant to be as they shared a passion for cars, racing, family, enjoyed cruises and just being together.
Charlie worked at Barbers Auto Parts in the machine shop, Automobile Exchange, Fains Auto Parts, Don’s Auto Repair and after having worked the past 31 years, retired on February 28, 2020, from Pemko/ASSA ABLOY Manufacturing in Ventura, where he worked his way up from Maintenance Technician to Maintenance Supervisor.
Charlie loved all things racing, Drag Racing, Nascar, really anything to do with racing. He built all kinds of engines, cars, boats, racecars and worked many years with his best friend Tom Huggins as Crew Chief for Performance Industries Racing team where the saying “Powered by Charlie Horses” was coined.
Charlie was a man of few words, but those who were blessed to know him, knew they were special to him and that he loved them by his big ol’ bear hugs that we will all dearly miss.
