Elizabeth “Betty” Leavitt, 95, of Oxnard, passed away peacefully in the morning on Tuesday, December 26 at St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital.

Born on November 5, 1922 to Roger Logan Cooley and Helen Selby in Plainfield, New Jersey, Betty spent her childhood on the New Jersey shore with her siblings, Justus, Helen, Nancy, Constance and Carolyn. She attended Northfield Mount Hermon Boarding School in Mount Hermon, Massachusetts and enjoyed outdoor activities such as horseback riding. Betty wed Edwin Leavitt in June of 1954 and they soon moved to Southern California where Betty devoted over 25 years as a secretary for Hueneme Elementary School. Before Edwin’s death in 1985, Edwin and Betty built a life filled with beach trips and nightly Manhattans.

Betty was a life-long dog lover that is remembered by her loved ones as feverishly independent, unfiltered and hilarious. She brought humor and laughter into each life she touched and genuinely wanted to know each and every person’s life story. For as long as she could, Betty maintained an active lifestyle and enjoyed tennis, swimming and walking her beloved dogs four times a day.

She is survived by her two children, Lawrence “Larry” Leavitt (Ana) and Christine Leavitt Cassy; six grandchildren, Tracie, Phillip, Alexis, Daniella, Leslie and Sonia; and three great-grandchildren, Maddox, Atticus and Amélie.

A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, January 5 at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park in Camarillo, California. Contributions in her memory can be made to The Humane Society.
