James Edward Niles

February 5, 1951 ~ July 10, 2018 (age 67)

James E. Niles, 67, of Camarillo, died suddenly on July 10 from complications from cancer.

Mr. Niles was born on Feb. 5, 1951. He grew up in Nyeland Acres and as a teen moved with his family to Ventura. Jim lived within Ventura County most of his life except for a few years traveling for work. He was a graduate of Rio Mesa High School, where he excelled at his lifelong passion of tennis and education. He graduated from California Lutheran University with a Bachelor’s and then a Master’s degree in Education. He also served in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica in the early 1970s.

James held various positions at Moorpark College, where he began his career in the mid-1970s as the Sports Information Officer. He was also the men’s tennis coach for several years, including a fourth-place finish in the State Tournament. He competed for years in men’s and co-ed doubles in the Ventura County club circuit.

James also worked locally for GTE, Moorpark College Foundation, Resume Expert Systems, University of Phoenix, Verizon, and for the past five years was a proud employee of Bay Alarm. His profession took him outside of Ventura County as well, including as an administrator in the Mendocino Community College District in Northern California and as a Dean at the University of Redlands.

Several years ago, taking advantage of his vast knowledge and memory of just about everything (as well as his ironic sense of humor), Mr. Niles had success on a number of game shows, including “Jeopardy,” “Headline Chasers,” “Bullseye,” “Press Your Luck,” and a few others.

Mr. Niles is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Olivia; son, Christopher; daughter, Elizabeth; stepson, Tony King (Linsey); grandson, Paxton; father, Lloyd; brother, Allen; sisters, Eileen and Kathy; and nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be Saturday, July 21, 2018 from 2:30pm-4:30pm at Conejo Mountain Funeral Home: 2052 Howard Road, Camarillo, CA 93012 – (805) 482-1959. Condolences may be left at https://www.conejomountain.com/tributes/James-Niles
