It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of his passing. He died peacefully in his sleep on February 17th due to complications from Alzheimer’s.
Marvin was born in the 1930’s in Smyth County, Virginia, raised and lived in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia, until moving to Southern California in 1969, putting down roots with his family in Newbury Park CA. He was a kind and caring soul who loved his family deeply. An Appalachian gentleman with an endearing southern drawl whose every word was chosen with deliberation and intent, because as he would say, “words once spoken can never be taken back”.
He and his wife Marylyn, married 65 years, were 47-year long members of 1st Baptist Church of Thousand Oaks. They started several different children’s focused ministries. He worked as an accountant and ended his business career as a controller, but after a brief retirement returned to work as a security guard. Every day he would pick up Marylyn from her preschool director job, put away cots, pick up toys, and sweep the sand from the playground, all to the delight of the little children who would naturally gather near to him, sensing, comforted by, the love and security indwelled in him by our Good Shepard.
He is preceded in death by his father Noah; his mother Henrietta; his wife Marylyn; his son Kevin; his brothers Garland, Garnett, Eugene, Lester; and his sister Carrie. He is survived by his son Keith (daughter-in-love, Elsa); his brother Joseph (sister-in-love, Margaret); his grandchildren, James, Andrew, Megan, Laurel, Sierra and Cameron; his great-grandson Benjamin; his great-granddaughters Pepper and Olivia and many nieces and nephews. We will miss him dearly, but know he is in heaven, embraced in love, honored for a life lived as a good and faithful servant.
