Mary Carmen Doyle

December 19, 1933 ~ January 2, 2023 (age 89) 89 Years Old

Tribute

Mary was born in 1933 in Sibley, Iowa, to Richard and Ethyl Ellerbroek. Growing up she and her younger brother Allen enjoyed the company of many cousins and, especially, riding on the train with her conductor grandfather. The Ellerbroek family moved to Bellevue, Nebraska, while Mary was in elementary school. In fifth grade, she endured having her mother as her teacher! Mary graduated from Bellevue High School in 1951 and headed off to the University of Nebraska.

While at the UN, Mary pledged the Kappa Delta Sorority and worked on her degree in business education. After graduating in 1955, she was presented with two teaching job offers: western Nebraska or Long Beach, California. Say no more. She was headed to the west coast and sunshine!

In the Fall of 1955 through a blind date, she met Marty Doyle. They fell in love and married on June 30, 1956 at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church. Kim arrived in April of 1957, instead of new living room furniture. Three and a half years later the boys began arriving in what felt like rapid succession: Rick, David (Therese), and Doug.

Mary filled her days with Girl Scouts, baseball team mom, chauffeur to swimming, sailing and golf lessons, in addition to softball, baseball, football, basketball, volleyball, and swim practices and games. She was actively involved in the Long Beach Kappa Delta Alumnae Association, as well as Panhellenic. Mary was president of the association in 1959 and 1975.

Once the last child was graduated from high school, Mom and Dad sold their Rossmoor home to move into the Doyle Family Newport Beach house. It quickly became the place of BBQ gatherings of family and friends. Mary enjoyed entertaining, and she did it well. And we were, all, the beneficiaries of her talent and hard work. Memories that will last a lifetime.

After 10 years of beach living, Mom and Dad decided that it was time to go “warm up” in the desert of La Quinta at the Citrus. There they lived on the 9th green and Mom continued her entertaining family and friends. She also became involved with the Coachella Valley Kappa Delta Alumnae Association continuing what she did in Orange County: charity work, and she received the Order of the Emerald for her extraordinary service to Kappa Delta. She even tried her hand at golf with Dad. The ball didn’t go far, but it sure went straight!

As Dad’s health declined, Mom decided it was necessary to be closer to family prompting their move to Leisure Village in Camarillo in 2008. Mary selflessly cared for Marty and his needs. Not surprising to anyone, she also found time to get involved in Leisure Village activities such as book club, pet club, Bone Builders, Movement in Motion, and the Camarillo Newcomers’ Club and smaller groups within it. Needless to say, Mary was busy … and enjoyed every minute of it!

But what Mary enjoyed and loved the most were her and Marty’s children: Kim, Rick, Dave (Therese), and Doug, her grandchildren: Patrick (Courtney), Paige (Morgan) Anderson, Connor, and Jack, and especially her great grandchildren: Laird Doyle and Avery Anderson. It is through them that her and Marty’s legacy will live on.

Mass of Christian Burial is Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at Padre Serra Catholic Church in Camarillo, California. Mary will be interred at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park in Camarillo.

~ Memorare ~

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,

that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection,

implored your help or sought your intercession, was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.

To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.

O Mother of the Word incarnate, despise not my petitions, but,

in your mercy, hear and answer me.
Amen.
