February 7, 1944 - September 24, 2021

Danielson - Mary Bernard, 77, long-time resident of Danielson, CT, passed away early Friday morning on 24th of September at Los Robles Hospital in Thousand Oaks, CA from complications following a recent surgery. She was born in Putnam, CT, February 7, 1944, a daughter of the late Norman and Bella Sherlock and grew up on Bradley Street. She was the wife of 53 years of Philip Bernard. They were married May 4, 1968, at St. Mary’s Church, Putnam. Mr. and Mrs. Bernard were long-time residents of Waterman Street in Danielson where they raised their two sons. In December 2015 they relocated to Camarillo, CA to retire. Mrs. Bernard grew up in Putnam, CT and attended Putnam High School (Class of 1962) then the Rhode Island School of Nursing. In her early years she spent time at Newington Children Hospital overcoming Legg Perthes and learning to walk without crutches. From those early times she wanted to become a nurse and upon completion of her education, worked at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam as a Registered Nurse where she was part of the team that opened the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. She worked as a nurse up until her oldest son was born then as a homemaker raising her family. Mrs. Bernard was an avid reader, spirited Red Sox fan, enjoyed board games with family members and raising her sons. She enjoyed family holidays and vacations to Cape Cod and Maine. Mrs. Bernard leaves her husband Philip Bernard of Camarillo, CA and two sons, David Bernard of Agoura Hills, CA and Michael Bernard of Danielson, CT; one brother, Michael Sherlock of Simsbury, CT and one sister, Nancy Leavitt of, Hampton, NH. She is also survived by two daughters-in-law, Lana Nicole Bernard and Lynn Ann Bernard; sister-in-law Janet Sherlock, three grandchildren, Michelle Elizabeth Spektor, Zachary Philip Bernard and Erin Elizabeth Stevens and nephews Christopher Patrick Leavitt and Benjamin Lee Leavitt. Mrs. Bernard was cremated in Camarillo, CA and a memorial service at Holy Cross Cemetery in Killingly, CT will be scheduled for Spring, 2022
