Tribute

Nancy Jean Bernier was born 18 February 1943 in Taunton, Massachusetts.

Her parents, George and Lucy Bernier preceded her in death and are also residents of Conejo Mountain Memorial Gardens. Nancy leaves two children, Lisa A. Loudermilk and Kevin D. Loudermilk of Oxnard. She has one brother, Bud Bernier, who resides in Orlando, Florida.  She passed on 17 January 2022 from complications of COPD as well as cancer of which she was in remission.

Her residency in Oxnard began in June of 1952, nearly 70 years ago as her father, George, transferred to Point Mugu Pacific Missile Range as a Civil Service employee from Quonset Point Rhode Island. The journey from Massachusetts to California with passengers Lucy, George, Nancy and Buddy resulted in the establishment of a new home, Oxnard. The four Bernier’s took a voyage from Massachusetts to California in a ’46 Ford that was a life changing event. The family sang “California Here I Come” as they wandered through the big cities, the mountains and deserts to what was then the promise land. Of the four pioneers, now there is one remaining.

Nancy graduated from Hueneme High School in 1961. Nancy was well liked and had many friends. Mom use to call her friends “The Hueneme Gang” as they were always into mischief but nothing harmful compared to these days; the worst thing they did was smoke and so the story goes……..I think that “gang” could tell some stories no one will ever know. Clean fun and lasting friendships. When you were a friend of Nancy’s it was long term.

Nancy and married Jerry D. Loudermilk in July of 1961. The newlyweds made their home on Pearl Street, in Port Hueneme owned by a wonderful elderly couple Mr. and Mrs. Reed.

Their first child, Lisa was born in 1962 and her first home was the duplex.

In 1963 Nancy, Jerry and Lisa moved to Fournier Street in Oxnard in a new four bedroom home. That home became the foundation of some friendships that evolved into almost a family setting, enduring decades,  as many of those dear friends remain part of today’s process of wishing Nancy a farewell.  The birthdays, the holidays and the funerals have imbedded friendships that are ever lasting.

Fournier Street soon had another resident in 1965, a son was born, Kevin D. Loudermilk

The family and friends in the Fournier setting soon turned into camping trips, barbeque’s, birthday parties, weddings, child births and ultimately a few passing’s. The warmth of the extended family has endured for decades. Family and friends forever.

Nancy was an employee of Port Hueneme School district for 35 years, she retired in 2006. During her tenure as a Media Consultant, she was a Secretary for CSEA (California State Educational Association) of which she wrote the Newsletter for several years and received honorary recognition.  She started in the kitchen and concluded her career as a Media Distribution Agent.

Nancy loved animals as she had several cats on her journey as well as dogs. Her all time favorite dog was “Frenchie”.

There is so much that can be said about this sweet, wonderful lady. She stood only 4’9” tall but was a mighty get things done type of person. In 1958 she was labeled with a nick name Tweety………and that nick name lives on. She had tweetie bird T Shirts and even a personalized license plate for her current Honda.

Our lives may never be the same without her but they were certainly better with her.

We love you Nancy…………
