Ned D Bartels

Ned Duane Bartels passed away peacefully at age 85 on September 3rd, 2021, in the house that he built in Somis, California.  Ned was born in Goodland, Kansas in 1935 and moved to Ventura with his family in 1940.  He lived in Ventura County for the next 80 years.  Ned graduated from Ventura High School and UCSB where he majored in Industrial Arts. In the early 50’s he was a lifeguard at Ventura Pier State Beach and often rode to work on his unicycle.  He was one of a few surfers in the area.  His favorite spot was Rincon where he and his friends surfed with no crowds, wetsuits, or leashes.  He met his wife of 58 years, Margaret “Pat” Bartels, and they married in 1958.  Ned was drafted in the army in 1959 serving two years as a cook.  Upon completion of his service he began teaching at the Oxnard Union High School District for 35 years.  He started his own construction company and continued to teach simultaneously for the better part of 25 years.  Ned built sailboats, banjoes, houses, furniture, and many other items over the years.  He had many hobbies including horses, livestock, water color painting, playing the banjo and piano, and bodysurfing. He enjoyed his weekly Friday morning breakfast with his friends at Eggs and Things for many years.  Ned and Pat had three children, Scott (Nicki) Bartels, Jeanne (Tony) Moilinski, and Eric (Kristin) Bartels.  They had five grandchildren; Matthew, Jack, Blake, Bryce, and Brock.  There will be a funeral service at Conejo Mountain Funeral Park on October 1st, at 11:00 am.
