Ray Patrick went Home to be with Jesus his Savior early on Sunday, August 11, 2019 at the age of 89. His final two months were spent at The Californian in Woodland, CA, where his wife Darlene, faithful partner for 63 years, spent those days beside him as he received hospice care.
His funeral service and burial will take place at Conejo Mountain Funeral Home in Camarillo, on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Christian Medical and Dental Association at http://cmda.org/donate.
From 1960 – 1988, Ray served the families of Ventura County as a popular orthodontist in Oxnard and Camarillo. He also taught at both UCLA’s and USC’s Schools of Dentistry. When a strained back forced him to retire from orthodontics, he determined to launch a new career. He retrained himself in AutoCAD, running his own drafting company and teaching that subject at Fillmore High School. He also reactivated his pharmacist license and worked as a relief pharmacist at College Pharmacy.
Born on March 8, 1930, Raymond Holmes Patrick was the youngest of 6 children of Rev. William E. and Una W. Patrick. He grew up in Bakersfield and along the Rincon Point near Santa Barbara. When he attended Ventura College, he met his future wife, Darlene Sager in the band. After their “whirlwind courtship” of seven years, they married on May 19, 1956. Ray went on to earn his pharmacy degree from UCSF, then completed two DDS degree programs in dentistry and in orthodontics.
A Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, Ray also belonged to the Christian Medical and Dental Association, with whom he once traveled to Mexico to provide dental services for people in remote villages. During his children’s school years, Ray served as a school board member at Mesa Union Elementary School. In addition to all these forms of service, Ray served his country as an Army dentist from 1957 – 1959 in Colorado Springs, CO.
When Ray became a devoted follower of Jesus Christ in his early adulthood, the love of Christ simply flowed out of him to his family, his friends, his staff and patients, his students, and even strangers. While attending Oxnard First Baptist Church and later Pleasant Valley Baptist (now Bible) Church, he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was eager to share his faith with anyone open to hearing about the hope he had found in Christ.
Ray enjoyed restoring old cars, especially his 1915 Ford Model T, singing, and playing his euphonium with church musicians. He played games and flew kites with his kids and grandkids, and always had kind words for his beloved wife. His ready laughter will be missed.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings (Lloyd, Eleanor, Ruth, Edward, and Richard), and his son, Jamie Leo. He is survived by his wife Darlene, and their children: Karen (Dennis) Ingle of Redwood Falls, MN; Sandra (Joe) Holland of Woodland, CA; and David (Paige) Patrick of Camarillo, CA. He also leaves behind ten grandchildren: Jeffrey, Benjamin, Christy, Timothy, and Deborah Ingle; Amanda, Laura, and Patrick Holland; and Taylor and Emily Patrick; and two great-grandchildren, Amelia and Lewis Raymond Ingle.
The legacy Ray Patrick leaves is one of love, faith, hope, wisdom, and endurance. Ray’s rich baritone voice is now singing the eternal praises of his God in heaven, where he awaits all who follow in his footsteps.
