Paging Doctor Loft , Paging Doctor Loft

It is with profound sorrow that the family of Richard (Dick) Loft, M.D. share his peaceful passing on February 8, 2024, at the age of 93. Richard was born to William and De Ette Loft on February 3, 1931, in Alexandria, Minnesota. He spent his first 11 years living in Monitor, Washington before moving to La Crescenta, California in 1943. He graduated from Glendale High School in 1949 where he met his first wife, Diane Knudsen. They married as he was enlisting in the Navy and had their first son, Craig. Following his Navy service, he enrolled at UC Davis studying to become a veterinarian. During this time, their second son Eric was born. Richard graduated with the highest honors. His brother William “Bill” Jr., a recent graduate of Harvard Medical School, talked him into going to medical school and they would later share a medical office. Richard graduated from Stanford University in 1962 during which time their third son Bruce was born. During these years, with three children at home, he would go to the “City” to play piano most weekends in night clubs to support his family. He finished up his residency in Sacramento where they had their fourth son Brian. They then moved the family to Cloverdale, California to join an existing practice. During a trip to visit family in California, he stopped along Highway 101 at the A&W in Camarillo and looked in the phone book for physicians in town. As luck would have it, he dialed the office of William Walsh, M.D., who told him to “stay there” and he would come meet with him. He convinced Richard to move to town and open a practice. In April 1964, he opened his medical practice in Camarillo at 3901 Las Posas Road, Suite 16. He would practice there for the next 50 years.

Richard was an amazing, humble man, a "doctor’s doctor,” making house calls up until retirement, delivering over 500 babies, volunteering to provide team physicals for Camarillo High School, Roadrunner Football, teaching anatomy at St. John's Seminary College, and serving on hospital boards. He was elected Director of the Camarillo Health Care District and Director at Livingston Memorial.

Richard began a second phase of his family life when he married Patricia (Pat) Johnson and added her daughter, Lori, to the mix. They were married for more than 30 years, and she worked as receptionist and social secretary for him. He had a child at Camarillo High School for 20 consecutive years. He and Pat became Don and Donas of Camarillo, worked selflessly for Pacesetters, became Camarillo Man-Of-The-Year and received many accolades from Federal, State, and local groups. He shot a wicked game of billiards that served him well in the Navy and was happiest when in Tahoe or behind the piano with the group “aloft” or reading Louis L’Amour. He loved to travel, especially in the Southwest. He would save every token and memory for a journal. He was always available to counsel or console and late-night calls from family (you know who you are) or friends never seemed to bother him.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife of 30 years, Patricia (Pat) Loft and brothers William Jr. (Bill) Loft, M.D. and Robert Loft.

He is survived by sons Craig (Monica), daughters Katie and Kelly, Eric (Mary Ann) son Ian, daughter Ann Lloyd (Trent), Bruce (Perri), daughters Lindsay and Lauren, son Dewey (Lindsay), Brian (Kim), daughter Mikaila Dawson (Parker), and sons Walker, Wyatt, and Wade, daughter Lori Cappelletti (Ricardo), daughters Nicole Farrell (Matt), and Jenna, and six great-grandchildren, Pierce, Karson, Camille, Scarlett, Grayson and Maryn. Niece Kristin Loft Grether and Nephew Steve Loft.

“Paging Doctor Loft, paging Doctor Richard Loft.” Rest in Peace, Dad, you are no longer “on call.”

The family would like to offer special thanks to Lindsay and James as well as Marino and Karen for the extraordinary care they gave Richard. Special thanks to Visiting Angels and Livingston Memorial.

A memorial service will be held on March 1, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Livingston Memorial Hospice.
