Tribute

Russell W. Luhrs, 74 years old, husband, father, grandpa, and Marine, passed away on February 2, 2023 in the Camarillo home he shared with his wife, Jane Luhrs, his unwavering caregiver, who survives him. He is also survived by their three children, who always made him smile with their various successes and their funny greeting cards: Bryan, Scott and Ashley Luhrs, and their spouses, Atalie Luhrs, Lisa Chanoux, and Shaun Watson, respectively.  He is survived by six loving grandchildren, who were his pride and joy: Quentin, Zoe, Zali, Zannah, Quincy & Quaid.

Russell was born on January 12, 1949 to Emily A. Haver and George E. Luhrs in Somerville, NJ.  In 1967 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Russell was a radio operator, one of the most courageous and heroic positions in the USMC, and he fought in the Vietnam War. He was proud to be a Marine and a Vietnam War Veteran, always giving back to his community. He was preceded in death by both his parents, as well as Cindy Stilo (sister-in-law) and John Van Horn (brother-in-law).

Russ married Jane Luhrs, née Van Horn on October 22, 1971. They celebrated the births of three wonderful children between the years of 1975 and 1987. Their “grand” adventure began in 2004, with the arrival of their first (of 6) grandchildren. Russell had a long career as an Associate Director of International Pharmaceutical Technology at Bristol Myers Squibb, and retired in 2009 to spend more time with his family.

Throughout his life, Russell remained a devout Christian, husband, grandfather, dad, veteran and jokester. He fought Parkinson’s with the resolve of a Marine, the same way he fought for his family and his country. He enjoyed Rock Steady Boxing, a fitness program solely dedicated to those with Parkinson’s to hold back the progression of the disease, many motorcycle adventures and cruises with cherished friends and family, and bread pudding for dessert, but none as much as he loved to spend a night with his family, making noise around the dinner table. Shortly before his death, he took a 15 day Hawaii cruise, celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary with his loving wife Jane, while also completing a bucket list item of visiting Pearl Harbor.

He will be deeply missed by his family and his many friends from the East Coast, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Florida, all the way to the West Coast, California and Camarillo. A service to honor Russell will be held Saturday, February 18, at 2pm PST at Conejo Mountain Funeral Home.  Pallbearers will be: Bryan Luhrs, Atalie Luhrs, Scott Luhrs, Lisa Chanoux, Ashley Luhrs, and Shaun Watson. Honorary Pallbearers include: Quentin Luhrs

- Psalm 23 -

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He makes me to lie down in green pastures;

He leads me beside the still waters.

He restores my soul;

He leads me in the paths of righteousness

For His name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley

of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil;

For You are with me;

Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;

You anoint my head with oil;

My cup runs over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me

All the days of my life;

And I will dwell in the house of the Lord

Forever.
