Tribute

Shirley D. Randall, age 86, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend to all, peacefully passed away November 28, 2020. She was born in Ashland, Kansas to Charles and Ollie Davis on January 16, 1934. She graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics, and a specialization in dietetics. She completed her internship at Kansas University Medical Center and was a registered dietitian until her retirement in 2000. At KSU she joined the Alpha Delta Pi sorority and was a devoted “Alpha Delt” all her life.

Shirley grew up on a cattle ranch which instilled a lifelong appreciation of and commitment to community. The city of Camarillo truly benefited from her belief in giving back to the community in which you live. After moving to Camarillo in 1969, she got involved with many community organizations. She played a key role in forming Region 68 AYSO soccer, volunteered at the Friends of the Library Bookstore, served as a City Ambassador, was a docent at both the Camarillo Ranch House and Pleasant Valley Historical Society Museum, and was known as “Mama Shirley” for AAUW’s TechTrek summer camps. She was very proud of the numerous awards she received throughout the years. The two awards that meant the most to her were Camarillo Woman of the Year (2005) and Pleasant Valley Historical Society Doña (2006). Shirley was an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and served in many leadership capacities there.

Between all of her community service activities, Shirley always found time for FUN! Shirley enjoyed getting together with all her bridge-playing friends and was always planning the next bridge game with her compatriots.

She loved traveling and learning about the history and culture of places she visited as she traversed the globe on her adventures. Her favorite trip was to Bali and she redecorated her living room with her Bali treasures. Shirley’s activities and involvement continued when, in 2018, she moved to AlmaVia, a wonderful assisted living community in Camarillo. She quickly became an honorary member of their marketing team and expanded their recycling efforts. She had a great time at AlmaVia and was crowned Miss Glam-Ma 2020 and won first place in their Science Fair. She felt loved and cared for by everyone at AlmaVia.

Shirley prided herself on “being there for others” and she was fortunate to have many supporting her. She set an example to her family of living a generous life; generous of her time, spirit, home, and love. Her family will continue this legacy. Being an only child, Shirley had many honorary family members throughout her life. Helen Birss, Lupe Lujan, and Sue Owechko were three of her “daughters” that greatly brightened her final years. Shirley referred to her healthcare providers as her “Dream Team”. Our heartfelt thanks go out to Dr. Esam Obed, Dr. Vimal Vermani, and the staff of the Camarillo DaVita Dialysis Center.

Shirley is survived by daughter, Diane Randall Mendoza and husband, Fernando, Camarillo, CA; son, Mark Davis Randall, Kona, Hawaii; and her pride and joy, her grandson, Marcus Randall Mendoza, Camarillo, CA.

We will have a Celebration of Life at a later date when it is safe to do so. If you wish to honor Shirley, please donate to the American Cancer Society, Food Share of Ventura County, Elder Care Alliance, or a local charity of your choice.
