William Norman Berg, known as Bill, was born on May 14, 1937 in Long Beach, CA to Harold and Aileen Berg. He went home to be with his Savior on September 9, 2023 in Camarillo, CA.
Bill grew up in a loving home with his brother, Bob. He attended Villanova Prep and graduated from there in 1955. At the young age of 15, Bill was blessed to meet the love of his life, Marilyn Mercer, age 14, at a Church youth group. Bill went on to graduate with his Bachelor’s degree in History and English from Santa Clara University in 1959. Shortly afterward, Bill and Marilyn were married on August 22, 1959 in Ojai, CA. After college, Bill served tour duty with the United States Army in Germany for 2 years. When they came home from Germany, they lived in Long Beach while Bill attended Long Beach State to earn his teaching credentials. They had four wonderful children and had the home in Camarillo that all the neighbor kids would come to play at. Their home was a safe and loving place to be.
They met many dear friends along the way. Bill and Marilyn enjoyed dance, cards, and pickle ball with their friends. Throughout this time, Bill worked as a US History and Sociology teacher at Thousand Oaks High School. He had a wonderful career that he loved. His kids often say that they can’t go anywhere without running into one of Dad’s students. Even on a trip to Ireland, they ran into one. All the students loved Mr Berg. His classroom, like his home, was a place where young people felt seen and loved. It was a peaceful environment where he played music and listened to the kids. Bill worked for Thousand Oaks High School for 35 years before retiring at the age of 62.
Throughout their lives, Bill and Marilyn were active members of the Catholic Church. Their faith and love was seen in everything they did. Bill was never shy about saying what a blessed life he led. He knew where his strength and comfort came from. Bill and Marilyn celebrated their 64th anniversary on August 22. They loved their life together and have shared that love with all of their family and friends throughout the years.
Bill is survived by his wife Marilyn, his daughter Kathleen, his sons Jim (Suzie), Kenneth, and Michael (Lorie). He was a loving grandpa to Amanda (Josiah), Thomas, David, Collin, and Makenna. His great grandchildren are Elijah, Abigail, and Levi. Bill is also survived by his brother Bob.
Bill’s memorial service will be held at 10am Thursday, September 28, 2023 at Padre Serra Church located at 5295 Upland Rd in Camarillo.
